Our Story

Gospel Light United Holy Church

Mount Olive, North Carolina

“The Church on the Hill”

Humble Beginnings

In the early 1900s, worship services were held in the home of faithful believers Moses and Sylvania Budd. These small but powerful gatherings laid the spiritual foundation for what would later become Gospel Light United Holy Church.

In July 1928, the first organized service was held at Maude Kornegay Hall in Mount Olive. As the congregation grew, God provided vision and leadership to establish a permanent place of worship.

Under the leadership of Rev. Hazel Brownrigg, land was purchased and the first church building was constructed in 1932. This marked a major milestone in the church’s history and solidified Gospel Light’s presence in the community.

Pastoral Leadership Through the Years

Throughout its history, Gospel Light United Holy Church has been blessed with faithful and visionary pastors who each contributed to its spiritual and structural growth.

Rev. Charles Perry led early worship gatherings prior to the establishment of the church building.

Rev. Hazel Brownrigg oversaw the purchase of land and the construction of the first sanctuary in 1932.

Rev. Adam Scott served in the early years and later returned for an additional term of service.

Rev. Raynor of Dunn, NC, provided leadership for two years.

Rev. H. Field, who later became a Bishop, also served as pastor.

Rev. B. B. Dunn led for approximately five years and guided a major remodel of the church in 1945.

Rev. A. C. Yarborough served until 1956 and strengthened church ministries, organizing committees and expanding youth and choir participation.

Rev. W. R. Wallace pastored for approximately 35 years. Under his leadership, the church experienced significant modernization, including structural renovations, brick exterior upgrades, central heating and air installation, expansion of the fellowship hall, and acquisition of additional property for parking.

Rev. Dwight Morrisey became pastor in 1988 and faithfully served for more than 36 years until his retirement in August 2024. His tenure was marked by continued growth, facility improvements, technology integration, transportation expansion (church bus and van), and spiritual development across generations.

In February 2025, Rev. Adrian Jerome Grandy was appointed as Pastor of Gospel Light United Holy Church. Pastor Grandy leads with a deep respect for the church’s rich heritage and a strong vision for its future. His ministry emphasizes biblical teaching, spiritual growth, unity, and community outreach. Under his leadership, Gospel Light continues its mission to impact lives and advance the Kingdom of God.
